Breast Augmentation, Liposuction, Tummy Tuck
The three queens of body surgical procedures
If you are considering some cosmetic surgery or several ones, we could be a convenient option.
Always keep in mind that for a patient that visits us from abroad, abdominoplasties or liposuctions or whatever other cosmetic surgery, can never be of great proportions because it is necessary to consider that you will come to Colombia for a relatively short period of time. This obliges us to carefully screening candidates so that procedures must fall within a small to medium range.
During the first decade of the 21st century terms such as Medical Tourism or Aesthetic Tourism became fashionable. The tourist industry wanted to convey the idea that it was possible traveling to another country to have cosmetic surgery and at the same time have a splendid and unforgettable vacation on paradisiacal beaches or sightseeing around the country enjoying its landscapes or its cuisine.
All of this was simply an advertising strategy that did not take at all into account the needs of the “tourist” from the point of view of his true condition i.e. that she/he was just another patient and therefore with their very specific needs such as care, rest and peacefulness.
At International Surgery we do not believe in any kind of medical tourism. Patients come to our country to be treated under a strictly medical/surgical perspective and require all the professionalism and attention they deserve.
Cosmetic Surgery in Colombia has very high medical standards and Colombia is one of the leading countries in per capita surgical operations per year. At the same time, some journalists and biased media try to pass on the idea that coming to Colombia for surgery is dangerous because every time a news comes out about a surgery that went wrong they give it an excessive coverage, ignoring the hundreds of thousands ones that successfully take place yearly.
We can’t but notice a bad intention behind these articles. Among other things, they suspiciously refrain from saying that Colombian statistics are not at all dissimilar to those of countries such as the United States or Europe: surgery always involves risks. It’s like traveling by plane, millions of people every day use airplanes without any problem but when an accident occurs the news spreads around the world like wildfire.
What also plays a crucial role is the fact that there are unscrupulous people who offer extremely low prices and take people to have surgery in so-called “garage clinics” that do not offer minimum safety conditions for patients. That’s why you have to be wary of extremely low prices and always check doctors’ credentials.
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is the cosmetic surgery by which the size of the breasts is increased, adding a silicone prosthesis improving and correcting their shape.
This procedure is recommended if you want to increase the volume of your breasts, you need to correct an asymmetry or you want to improve their shape.
At International Surgery we adapt to your needs to have a larger breast, but always aiming to achieve a natural appearance.
We recommend placing the implants in a submuscular position (under the major pectoral muscle) because it is the one that offers the longest lasting results, improves mammogram visualization and provides the best aesthetic result. The implant under the pectoral muscle does not interfere with breastfeeding or sporting activities.
If breast has dropped (ptosis) then it will be necessary to perform a breast lift (mastopexy) looking for several objectives such as relocating the areola and nipple in a higher position, improve the shape of the breast either by reorganizing the mammary parenchyma or, if this is not enough, placing a prosthesis to restore volume. Finally, breast lift surgery seeks to locate the best possible scars that are necessary to improve the tension of the skin.
Multiple surgical techniques can be used, the choice of which will depend on the quality of the skin, the volume of the parenchyma of the breast and the size and position of the areola.
If the skin is very flaccid, with stretch marks, it means that it has lost its elastic capacity and therefore it will require larger scars.
In general terms, in a breast lift, the scars will be placed around the areola (periareolar) in order to reposition it. Depending on the flabbiness of the skin, scars in the lower pole will be vertical or inverted T-shaped to compensate for excess skin. In other words, the more flaccid the skin, the more resection will be needed and therefore the scar will be longer. If, on the other hand, the skin is firm, it is possible to perform pexia with a periareolar scar only.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) aims to remove excess of fat and skin restoring weakened muscles creating a smoother and firmer abdominal profile.
A flat abdomen has been, throughout history, a synonym for beauty. However, achieving this goal is in many cases an arduous task. Our lifestyle and diet, pregnancy and sedentarism cause the abdomen to become flaccid, filled with fat deposits and with lot of hanging tissue and skin. To eliminate that flabbiness and and all that redundant skin accumulated fat without surgery is impossible.
Due to the above, it should be made very clear that this surgical technique helps to define body areas and improves the silhouette, but mainly in slightly overweight patients.
Without a change in eating and physical habits, no matter how spectacular the results may be, they will not last in time.
Be aware therefore that when considering an abdominoplasty you are planning a life change that will generate wonderful results if you are responsible with yourself.
Liposuction (Lipoplasty, Liposculpture) is a cosmetic surgery that aims to reshape the body contour by suctioning excess of fat out of a particular area of the body and eventually injecting it back through lipoinjection into another area; the classical example being the lipoinjection of the buttocks a.k.a. Autologous Fat Transfer or Fat Grafting.
Liposculpture should not be seen as a method of losing weight and therefore is not a treatment for obesity. Although it is true that megaliposuctions have been described (above 5 liters of fat) we consider that the risks involved in these “giant liposuctions” are very high. There are other techniques (such as bariatric surgery) that offer a better long-term result for patients with obesity.
It should be made very clear that liposculpture is an excellent surgical technique to define body areas and improve the silhouette of patients with normal weight or slightly overweight. However, in order for the results to last over time, a change in eating habits and lifestyle is highly necessary.
Many people with good figure and healthy habits nevertheless have areas of their bodies that present unwanted fat deposits which resist to disappear no matter how much physical exercise is done or how strict the diet is. We refer for example to the so-called “spare tires” on the flanks or the nefarious “love handles” on the outer thighs. This fat is very stubborn and extremely difficult to eliminate being liposuction the only answer.
The three cosmetic surgeries mentioned above are perfectly suited to be combined within one single surgical session as they are completely compatible with each other. For example, a patient who is eligible for tummy tuck often also has also fat deposits and therefore automatically becomes an ideal case for liposuction as well. Of course caution and rationality must always prevail when it comes to the surgical stress that a patient can withstand, always bearing in mind what has already been mentioned here about the limited time available to patients from abroad that come to our country on a limited stay.
One word we always try to avoid when we talk about several surgeries performed at the same time is “combo”. We think that we are not merchants of surgery but professionals committed to the health and safety of the patient.
